Exploring the Heart of Colombian Coffee: My Journey to Antioquia
This year, I had the privilege of traveling to Colombia, a country that holds a special place in the coffee world. From competing on the global stage to connecting with local farmers and experiencing cutting-edge coffee practices, the trip was a mix of professional growth, personal connections, and unforgettable memories. Here’s a glimpse into what made this journey so impactful.
Stepping Onto the Global Stage
One of the most exciting moments was participating in the Cold Brew Championship sponsored by Toddy, held at the stunning Finca La Pareda during the Producers Roasters Forum. I showcased a cold brew drink served in a margarita glass, elevated by a bubble blaster filled with lemon and lime aromas. The burst of smoke added a dramatic flair, making the experience as fun as it was innovative. Competing alongside passionate individuals in this coffee-forward environment was both humbling and inspiring.
Cupping Coffee and Building Relationships
At the heart of this trip was the opportunity to cup coffee with local farmers. One standout moment was a massive cupping session where my colleagues and I tasted a variety of coffees at a large table. It wasn’t just about assessing the flavors but about connecting with the people who pour their lives into growing these beans.
The experience was captured in a 360-degree video, which spun between the cupping table and a tour of Finca Pareda. This farm impressed me with its regenerative practices—feeding cascara to flies for larvae, utilizing chickens and pigs for soil health, and creating a sustainable ecosystem that benefits both the coffee and the environment.
Farm Visits and Regenerative Practices
During my trip, I visited farms like La Colombia and La Reserva in Antioquia, focusing on sustainable farming methods and learning about their practices. These visits aligned with our appreciation for quality coffee and the importance of environmental stewardship.
Producers Roasters Forum in Antioquia
I attended this event with Cumbres Coffee, gaining insights from producers, roasters, and peers. The forum served as a platform to deepen relationships within the coffee industry.
Colombian Beer Club
A playful yet memorable highlight was starting the Colombian beer club with my colleagues. It was a fun way to connect, reflecting the ability to balance work with camaraderie and shared experiences.
Focus on Coffee Relationships
My trip was more than just about coffee; it was about the people behind it. This aligns with our ongoing efforts to foster meaningful partnerships, such as your direct trade relationship with Gasharu Coffee in Rwanda.
