Story, Origin & Processing: Antigua is one the oldest coffee growing regions in Guatemala
and famous for the production of one of the best coffees of the world. Three volcanos named
Agua, Acatenango and Fuego surround the beautiful valley. They are not only providing a
unique panorama but also ensure the most nutritious (volcano-) soil which has a great impact
on the cup profile.
In the south of Antigua, in the middle of the “Valle de Almolonga” you will find this beautiful
coffee estate called Finca El Potrero at the bottom of the Water Volcano, at around 1.500
masl. This altitude classifies the beans as “strictly hard beans” referring to a very dense bean
structure that, thanks to a slow maturation process, contains all the fine aromas.
Back in 1898 a man called Carlos Herrera Luna bought this piece of land called “Hacienda El
Potrero”. In its beginning the land was used for cattle farming and that’s where its name was
originated. Early 1928 the farm’s destination changed to became a coffee plantation. Today
the farm is run by the Olivero Arroyo family and has become one of the best coffee farms in
the Antigua region. The whole farm is covered by shade trees (Grabilea and Inga). The
coffee is processed on the farm: modern wet- and dry-mills and four patios for sun-drying the
coffee guarantee best post-harvest as well as excellent production practices.
Cup Profile: The most distinctive attribute of this coffe (when cupping samples from the region) was the beautiful plum and stonefruit notes which add to the full and lingering finish.
There is bright,clean acididty giving structure to the coffee. A beautiflly balanced cup with delicate coffee blossom and jasmine aromas. A rich plum, raisin and stonefruit finish.
